Once again I got lucky. I was in Hilo for most of January, planning for my mother’s 90th birthday (among other things) when news of the canoes started spreading.

As you read this, I am winging my way back to the Pacific Northwest after seven months on Molokai. It feels good to be heading back to the other “home,” closer to family and friends, but…not so good leaving the warmth, the new friends, and the new appreciations and understandings discovered on this special island.
